While many seek long life through expensive gadgets and “bio-hacks,” a fascinating group of Brazilians is reaching the age of 110 and beyond—often with limited access to modern medicine. These “supercentenarians” are teaching us that the secret to a happy long life may be written in our very cells.
As we consider the gift of a long life, we are reminded of the promise in the Word:

“With long life I will satisfy him (Adonai) and show him my salvation.”
Tehillim (psalm) 91:16 CJB
Long Life: The Biological Advantage
Recent research published in Genomic Press highlights that supercentenarians aren’t just lucky; they possess “industrial-strength” internal systems. Unlike the average person, whose cellular “waste management” slows down with age, these individuals maintain efficient protein clearance and genomic stability. Essentially, their bodies continue to “take out the trash” well into their second century of life.
Furthermore, while most immune systems weaken over time, the immune systems of these long-lived Brazilians appear to adapt, becoming more resilient against chronic inflammation—a major driver of heart disease and dementia. This biological fortitude allows them to remain independent and active far longer than expected (Medical News Today, 2026).
The Genetic Tapestry of Brazil’s Longest-Lived Men
Brazil is home to an extraordinary phenomenon: three of the world’s ten oldest living men reside there. Researchers believe this may be due to Brazil’s rich genetic diversity, a “tapestry” of ancestries from Europe, Japan, and Africa. This mixture has created unique genomic patterns that may foster extreme biological resilience.
It is a reminder that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Just as the body is composed of many parts working in harmony, these diverse genetic backgrounds seem to work together to protect the body from the “thieves” of vitality. As the CJB notes, “I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, my soul knows it well.” (Tehillim [Psalms] 139:14, CJB).
Practical Pillars for Your Own Longevity Journey
While we cannot change our genetics, health experts emphasize that “lifestyle medicine” is the most powerful tool for the rest of us. Building “structural armor” through physical activity is essential. Experts recommend a daily walking habit, noting that adding just 1,000 steps a day can reduce the risk of death by 15%.
Beyond movement, the pillars of a long life include a plant-predominant diet, 7–9 hours of quality sleep, and—crucially—maintaining strong social and spiritual ties. By stewarding our bodies as the temples they are, we honor the life we’ve been given. “Or don’t you know that your body is a temple for the Ruach HaKodesh who lives inside you, whom you received from God? The fact is, you don’t belong to yourselves.” (1 Corinthians 6:19, CJB).
